My recent short story, Negative #6, published in the October issue of Kindling, is now being featured on their blog, The Woodpile. It’s sort of a Behind the Music thing for writers. Check it out here.

It comes on like an electrical storm at the dead end of August, the dry air charged and ready to split. Every stray photon of light tunnels through my grey matter like a double-barrel Roman Candle aimed through my eyelids toward the back of my skull.

A few miserable days passed. Endless sleepless nights. Then one morning I awoke to the realization that I had slept a full night. Like most people, when you don’t sleep for days on end and finally crash a full night, that next day you feel immediately worse.

So the dog had been howling for three nights. This place didn’t allow dogs when I’d moved in, one of the reasons I liked it. It was a good place to write, to watch people from the porch as they walked to the park or piled into the car to go to the beach.

The flies in my place don’t know how good they have it till they’re dead. 10 year single malt Irish whiskey, 9 year small batch bourbon. In the summer I tend to lose more booze that way, but what a way to go.
